For approximately the same price as a single cartridge, you can buy a reusable cartridge. The different kits come with different amounts of refill ink, generally enough for two to five refills depending on price and brand. They are available just about any store, including your friendly neighborhood Walgreens, Target, and Wal-Mart. They are also available for all major printer makes and models. This is a good contribution towards ‘going green’ as well, since you are wasting less than you would be by using the standard cartridges. Using the refillable cartridges is very easy. Most kits come with a syringe, which you fill with the correct amount of ink. Be careful not to overfill the cartridge! After that, the reload-able cartridge has a spot for injecting the ink into it. Insert the needle into that, and make sure to inject the ink a slow and steady pace. You can put any unused ink back in the ink container. Do not forget to clean the syringe afterward, of course. Once you have reinstalled the cartridge into the printer, check to make sure that all is working properly by printing a test page. If you are not familiar with this process, check your printer's owner’s manual for instructions, or check with the printer wizard, if it has one. But what can you do with the old cartridges? I suggest recycling them. It may take a few more minutes of your time, but there are benefits to recycling. Ink cartridges are made of non-biodegradable plastics. This means that if you simply throw them away, they will sit in a landfill for a very long time. HP offers an easy recycling program. What you need to do is take the used-up cartridges to any authorized location, such as a participating Kinkos. Other companies that have similar programs include Epson and Kyocera. If you are unable or unwilling to go that far out of the way, there are many companies that you can find and research online that will help you send them in the mail. Some will even pay you decent money for them! So really, a cheap and environmentally friendly way to handle printer ink cartridges is to purchase and use the refillable kits, and to recycle the old, non-refillable ones.
